ASTM/ASME 416 Stainless Steel Pipes & Tubes are free-machining martensitic (UNS S41600) products conforming to ASTM A213/A268 standards, featuring a sulfur-enhanced (0.15% min.) chromium (12-14%) composition for exceptional machinability while maintaining core 410-grade corrosion resistance. This specialty alloy achieves superior surface finish and tool life (85% machinability rating vs. 1212 carbon steel) through controlled sulfur inclusion morphology, making it ideal for high-volume production of precision components like valve stems, pump shafts, and fasteners. The material maintains useful hardness (up to 40 HRC when heat-treated) with better chip-breaking characteristics than standard martensitic grades, though with some tradeoff in transverse mechanical properties. Primarily utilized in CNC-machined parts rather than pressure applications, 416 stainless steel tubes serve critical roles in automotive systems, firearm components, and industrial machinery where complex machining operations demand optimized material performance, with recommended stress-relief annealing after welding to restore corrosion resistance at heat-affected zones.
