ASTM/ASME 409 Stainless Steel Pipes & Tubes are titanium-stabilized ferritic (UNS S40900) products conforming to ASTM A268 standards, featuring 10.5-11.7% chromium content with titanium addition (6×C min.) for improved weldability and intergranular corrosion resistance. This cost-effective ferritic grade offers good oxidation resistance up to 675°C (1250°F) and atmospheric corrosion resistance, making it particularly suitable for automotive exhaust systems, heat exchanger tubing, and structural components in mildly corrosive environments where thermal cycling occurs. The stabilized ferritic microstructure provides resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and demonstrates lower thermal expansion than austenitic grades, while maintaining adequate formability for fabrication applications requiring a balance between performance and economy in moderate service conditions.
