ASTM/ASME 405 Stainless Steel Pipes & Tubes are ferritic-grade (UNS S40500) products conforming to ASTM A268 standards, featuring a low-carbon (≤0.08%) chromium alloy (11.5-14.5% Cr) with aluminum addition (0.1-0.3%) for improved oxidation resistance and weldability. This stabilized ferritic grade is specifically designed for high-temperature service up to 650°C (1200°F) where resistance to stress corrosion cracking and sulfur atmospheres is required, making it particularly suitable for heat exchanger tubing, boiler components, and refinery equipment where thermal cycling occurs. The alloy's ferritic microstructure provides better thermal conductivity and lower thermal expansion than austenitic grades while offering cost-effective corrosion resistance in mildly corrosive environments, though with reduced toughness at sub-zero temperatures.
